Biomedical Engineer Senior

We are looking to appoint for a 36 months fixed term contract skilled and enthusiastic senior medical/biomedical engineer with solid work/academic experience in the clinical environment and with the use of medical devices in a real-world scenario.

The ideal candidate should possess a master degree in bioengineering or biomedical engineering and be able to demonstrate excellent applied practical skills and proficiency in:

  • Technical understanding of medical devices
  • A good knowledge of common rehabilitation practices
  • A good knowledge of medical device usage and management within clinical environments.
  • Ability in analysis and solution of logical problems.
  • Good communication skills and ability/willingness to integrate within a multidisciplinary international research group.
  • A good knowledge of English.

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Analyzing common rehabilitation practices and procedures both in orthopedics and neurology, in close contact with clinical partners
  • Defining rehabilitation protocols and metrics suited for implementation in medical robotic devices
  • Supporting the engineering team in the mechatronic development of robotic devices, fostering R&D activities towards correct clinical needs
  • Developing partnerships with clinical research centers and physiotherapy centers
  • Defining clinical trials to study efficacy and effectiveness of robotic rehabilitation devices
  • Supervising and validating protocol implementation and performance reports

A basic knowledge / experience in robotic devices for rehabilitation will be considered a plus.

Industrial Designer

We are looking to appoint for a 36 months fixed term contract highly motivated, outstanding young Industrial Designer with a solid background and minimum 3 years of industrial experience.

Proficiency in designing new product layout and usability, through the development of concepts, mockups and a creative, though pragmatic, attitude are essential. Good knowledge of common manufacturing techniques such as CNC machining, laser cutting, molding, rapid prototyping are required.

Experience in one of the following areas will be considered an asset:

 

  • Development of electromechanical products
  • Development of medical devices
  • Development of high-tech products

 

The selected applicant will work on the new product development of a series of medical devices which will be developed in the following three years.

Junior Electronic Engineers

We are looking to appoint for a 36 months fixed term contract skilled and enthusiastic Electronic Engineers with an excellent, well established record in design and development of electronic boards for complex mechatronic systems with highly customised sensing and actuation units. Experience in the design of electronic boards for advanced robots will be an asset.

The ideal candidates should possess an Electronic Engineering degree and be able to demonstrate proficiency in hardware design and testing with a proven portfolio of practical designs and excellent hands-on practical skills.

The successful candidates should have:

  • A good first degree in Electronic Engineering or closely related area.
  • From entry level up to 4 years of experience in electronic design, testing and debugging.
  • A good working knowledge of PCB development tools such as Altium Designer, Orcad etc.
  • Good knowledge of power electronics, motor control and embedded firmware.
  • Good knowledge of embedded microcontrollers (8 to 32 bits) and DSPs.
  • Familiarity in debugging boards and electronic systems (wiring, use of oscilloscopes, multimeter, solder station etc.)
  • Working knowledge of analogue signal conditioning for instrumentation (strain gauges, piezo devices, accelerometers, gyros etc.).
  • Good knowledge of state-of-the-art electronic hardware.
  • Familiarity with European Directives relevant to electrical, electronic and medical devices conformity (EMC, machine, low voltage and medical devices directives), and international (ISO, IEC) and/or Italian standards (CEI, UNI) will be advantageous.
  • Proactive attitude and results-oriented mindset.
  • Good interpersonal and communications skills and willingness to integrate in an international research team.
  • A good knowledge of English or ability to attain this is desirable.

Position overview

Specific responsibilities of the job would include the following:

  • Design, optimization and testing of electronic boards for actuation control, signal conditioning, communication and power management.
  • Interact with and evaluate suppliers of custom electronic boards.
  • Generate detailed technical documentation for board production and testing.
  • Collaborate with other engineering disciplines (mechanics, software and control) to ensure the successful integration of their designs with the rest of the system.

Junior Mechanical Engineers

We are looking to appoint for a 36 months fixed term contract highly motivated, outstanding Junior Mechanical Engineers with a solid background in mechanics and/or robotics with proven experience in hardware and mechanism design and analysis.

The successful candidate should have at least an excellent first degree in mechanical engineering or related areas and proven experience in CAD design and hands-on skills in assembling and testing of mechanical components.

The candidate has to show basic knowledge of design software tools (PTC Creo or equivalent, any other relevant is also welcome) and the ability to interact with workshops, manufacturers and suppliers and to generate detailed technical documentation for 3D/2D assembly and parts manufacturing. Familiarity with laboratory and testing equipment is warmly welcome together with a pro-active mindset and result oriented attitude. Good communication skills are required, with the ability and willingness to integrate within a multidisciplinary international research group.

A good knowledge of English will be useful but the ability to learn is also acceptable.

Experience in one or more of the following areas will be considered a plus:

We are looking to appoint for a 36 months fixed term contract enthusiastic and outstanding Software Engineers with proven experience in programming (C and C++) at all levels, from embedded programming to GUI design.

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing software code in the area of control and Human-Machine Interface for embedded robotic devices.

The successful candidate should have:

  • An excellent first  degree in computer science or engineering/related areas
  • From  entry level up to 3 years of proven extensive programming experience
  • Proven development experience using C, C++, using an OOP approach both under Windows and Linux
  • Proven experience in one or more of the following areas:
  • Control of electromechanical systems and/or sensor fusion algorithms
  • GUI design and knowledge of toolkits such as Qt, wxWidgets or others
  • Multithread programming, inter-process communication and related issues
  • Linux kernel configuration

We are looking to appoint for a 36 months fixed term contract a skilled and enthusiastic senior software engineer with proven track record of code development for complex electromechanical devices.

The ideal candidate should possess a Computer Science Engineering degree and be able to demonstrate proficiency in the development of practical designs and excellent applied practical skills.

The selected candidate must have:

  • 3-5 years of industrial experience, preferably in R&D
  • Competence in the design of complex software systems applied to electromechanical devices

 Excellent knowledge of C and C++ languages is a must, in both embedded programming and GUI design. The candidate should also possess experience in one or more of the following areas: control of electromechanical systems and/or sensor fusion algorithms, multithread programming, use of Linux OS, embedded programming for signal conditioning and control system development.

The following skills are considered a plus:

L’Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) è una fondazione di diritto privato - cfr. determinazione Corte dei Conti 23/2015 “IIT è una fondazione da inquadrare fra gli organismi di diritto pubblico con la scelta di un modello di organizzazione di diritto privato per rispondere all’esigenza di assicurare procedure più snelle nella selezione non solo nell’ambito nazionale dei collaboratori, scienziati e ricercatori ”.

IIT è sotto la vigilanza del Ministero dell'Istruzione, dell'Università e della Ricerca e del Ministero dell'Economia e delle Finanze ed è stato istituito con la Legge 326/2003. La produzione di IIT ad oggi vanta circa 6990 pubblicazioni, oltre 130 finanziamenti Europei e 11 ERC, più di 350 domande di brevetto attive, oltre 12 start up costituite e altrettante in fase di lancio. Dal 2009 l’attività scientifica è stata ulteriormente rafforzata con la creazione di dieci centri di ricerca nel territorio nazionale (a Torino, Milano, Trento, Parma, Roma, Pisa, Napoli, Lecce, Ferrara) e internazionale (MIT ed Harvard negli USA) che, unitamente al Laboratorio Centrale di Genova, sviluppano i programmi di ricerca del piano scientifico 2015-2017.

IIT: the numbers

Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) is a public research institute that adopts the organizational model of a private law foundation. IIT is overseen by Ministero dell'Istruzione, dell'Università e della Ricerca and Ministero dell'Economia e delle Finanze (the Italian Ministries of Education, Economy and Finance).  The Institute was set up according to Italian law 326/2003 with the objective of promoting excellence in basic and applied research andfostering Italy’s economic development. Construction of the Laboratories started in 2006 and finished in 2009.

IIT has an overall staff of about 1,440 people. The scientific staff covers about 85% of the total. Out of 45% of researchers coming from abroad 29% are foreigners coming from more than 50 countries and 16% are returned Italians. The scientific staff currently consists of approximately 60 Principal Investigators110 researchers and technologists350 post-docs and 500 PhD students and grant holders and 130 technicians. External funding has allowed the creation of more than 330 positions . The average age is 34 and the gender balance proportion  is 41% female against 59% male.

In 2015 IIT received 96 million euros in public funding (accounting for 80% of its budget) and obtained 22 million euros in external funding (accounting for 20% of its budget). External funding comes from 18 European Projects, other 17 national and international competitive projects and approximately 60 industrial projects.

So far IIT accounts for: about 6990 publications, more than 130 European grants and 11 ERC grants, more than 350 patents or patent applications12 up start-ups and as many  which are about to be launched. The Institute’s scientific activity has been further strengthened since 2009 with the establishment of 11 research nodes throughout Italy (Torino, Milano, Trento, Parma, Roma, Pisa, Napoli, Lecce, Ferrara) and abroad (MIT and Harvard University, USA), which, along with the Genoa-based Central Lab, implement the research programs included in the 2015-2017 Strategic Plan.
