1 PHD in Materials science and nanotechnology at IIT (Genova) in collaboration with Università Milano-Bicocca - [ PhD ]

Workplace: Genova, IIT
Added on: 22/05/2019 - Expires on: 13/06/2019

IIT has established a collaboration with the Università degli studi di Milano Bicocca and finances 1 scholarship linked to a PhD position available at the PhD Programme in Materials Science and Nanotechnology, organized by Università degli studi di Milano Bicocca. Research and training activities are jointly conducted within IIT structures in Genova.

The position offered is linked to the following research project:

Title: Preparation of new keratin-based bioplastics
Supervisor: Dr. Giovanni Perotto – Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, Genova (GE), giovanni.perotto@iit.it

New bio-sourced and biodegradable materials that can replace plastics are needed to reduce the plastic pollution of the environment. For a circular economic process, though, the conversion of proteins can be very advantageous because proteins are a renewable source of materials that are also completely biodegradable and compostable. In the framework of the PROTHEIFORM project, founded by Fondazione Cariplo, new protein-based materials will be developed. This PhD activity aims at using a hybrid Nano technological and chemical approach, to overcome the performance limits of proteins as materials and to facilitate their processing. The focus of the activity will be the development of the new processing technologies and material technologies needed to successfully exploit keratins extracted from wool or feathers in materials that will have useful properties for packaging. The research activities will be performed at the Italian Institute of Technology, located in Genova.

Requirements: The ideal candidate will be a creative and proactive student with a Bachelor’s Degree in one of the following areas: Material Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, Physics, Biology. He/she will work in an international and interdisciplinary environment, with access to state-of-the-art equipment.

The official call can be found at the University of Milano-Bicocca at this document: RESEARCH THEMES 35 CYCLE (on page 7)
