Mechanical Design Engineer - [ Technical ]

The Dynamic Legged Systems Lab (DLS Lab, ) at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) is looking for a full-time senior mechanical design engineer (fixed term contract) with proven experience in CAD, structural analysis and testing.

The successful candidate will have a leading role in the various mechanical and mechatronics design aspects regarding new versions of autonomous, all-terrain legged robots. In addition, the candidate will be involved in the maintenance and upgrades of existing robots. Furthermore, he/she will provide general mechanical and mechatronics engineering support for the different projects within the DLS Lab.

The successful candidate should have:

  • strong expertise in mechanical design, with experience in the field of (legged) robotics
  • excellent MSc degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • at least 7-8 years of work experience after MSc degree
  • experience in developing test fixtures, conducting tests, and iteratively improving designs
  • demonstrated understanding of metrology and GD&T
  • fundamental understanding of stress mechanics
  • excellent working knowledge of NX preferably or at least one industry standard CAD package, including both drafting and modelling packages
  • leadership skills
  • creativity and out-of-the-box thinking
  • team player with good oral and written communication skills (English language)
  • willingness to integrate into a multidisciplinary, dynamic, international research group
  • highly motivated

Further desirable but not necessary skills include:

  • Experience in Creo
  • Experience with finite element analysis, specifically analysing bolted connections and stiffness optimization
  • Understanding of strain gauging techniques and sensor selection
  • Experience in design for harsh outdoor environments
  • Experience with hydraulic systems, machine building or robots
  • Experience with automation in an industrial setting
  • Knowledge of Matlab

The salary will depend on qualifications and experience and will include additional health benefits.
