The Soft Robotics for Human Cooperation and Rehabilitation Research Line at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT, Genoa, Italy) is looking for a full-time mechanical engineer with proven experience in mechanical design, testing and development of robotic systems, with particular focus on activities related to the development of robotic systems for human robot interaction and cooperation, as for example humanoids robots and bionic upper limbs.

The SoftRobotics Lab is known for its cutting-edge research in the area of humanoid and rehabilitation robots, with focus on soft robotics actuation, end-effectors devices and haptic systems.

Softhand and SoftHand Pro, two of the most recent high performance and innovative robotic and prosthetic hands, are among the devices developed in the lab together with the high performance and dexterous humanoid robot Walk-Man (developed in collaboration with the “Humanoids and Human Centered Mechatronics” IIT research line). The SoftBot Lab is a dynamic environment where the most advanced understandings of natural motor control and the most innovative technologies of robotics proceed in symbiosis, together with a keen interest in technology transfer and the adoption of the EU Open Source/Open Data strategies. The lab counts on outstanding equipment and facilities together with strategic collaborations. Moreover, the lab is active in many research projects such as SoftPro (EU H2020 project), Natural Bionics (ERC project), SoftHandler (ERC POC) among many others.

The successful candidate will have a key role in the design of mechatronic systems , testing, and development of advanced  robotics systems, focusing primarily on the development of technological solution for humanoids and bionic limbs. This development will be performed in collaboration with partners of several EU Projects and will involve liaising between technical and clinical team-members. Among other duties, the incumbent will be responsible for determining mechanical, electrical and sensing interfaces, definition of specifications and requirements, and testing.


  • Experience in the mechanical design of robotic systems with multiple degrees of freedom, including study design of the overall mechatronic architecture
  • Experience in production of small series and realization of prototypes
  • Experience in developing and testing of devices
  • Experience in the field of rehabilitation
  • Experience in the field of humanoid robots
  • Experience in design of end-effectors and anthropomorphic joints.
  • Creativity thinking
  • Team player with good oral and written communication skills (English language)
  • Willingness to integrate into a multidisciplinary, dynamic, international research group
  • Highly motivated

Experience and strong knowledge in the following fields:

  • Mechanical Design
  • Synthesis of mechanisms
  • Technologies for production and realization of mechanical prototypes and small series.
  • FEM analysis
  • CAM design
  • Device testing and benchmarking
  • Knowledge and experience with sensors, e.g. position sensors, F/T sensors, accelerometers, surface EMG sensors
  • Excellent knowledge of mechanical design softwares (e.g. PTC CREO, ANSYS, MASTERCAM)
  • Knowledge of control software (e.g. Matlab)
