PHD position: Development of material technologies for new products in agriculture using the concept of circular economy - [ PhD ]

Workplace: Genova, IIT
Added on: 10/07/2019 - Expires on: 11/09/2019

Call for PhD candidates: 35th Cycle of PhD Program in Agri -Food System of Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore– Piacenza campus in collaboration with the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT)

Agriculture could be a pioneer sector for the development of new products following the circular economy concept for the reintroduction of discarded materials in the production line. This is because the large amounts of discarded biomass could be used for the development of products and devices with short seasonal lifetimes, commonly needed in agriculture. Nevertheless, there is a lack of processing technologies that can allow the development of such circular economy products.

In the framework of the collaboration between IIT and the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, the successful PhD candidate will develop bio-based materials and products for the use in agricultural applications using physicochemical and biological processing technologies to convert discarded biomass. The research activities will be performed at the Smart Materials laboratories of the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, located in Genova, and the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Piacenza.

Requirements: Being a highly interdisciplinary project, the ideal candidate will be a creative and proactive student with a Master of Science’s Degree in one of the following areas: Material Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, Physics, Agriculture and Food. He/she will work in an international and interdisciplinary environment, with access to state-of-the-art equipment.
