The Humanoid Sensing and Perception laboratory (http://www.iit.it/humanoid-sensing-and-perception) at the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) is seeking to appoint a postdoc on Model Driven Software Engineering for Mobile Manipulation with Safety Constraints. This position is supported by the project SCOPE, which is funded by the Horizon 2020 EU project RobMoSys Grant Agreement 732410 through its second open call.
Safety is a fundamental concern in every robotic control system, but it becomes particularly relevant and difficult to address in situations where a robot operates in close interaction with humans and exhibits any level of decisional autonomy. Such is the case of robots built for assistive applications in which software defects have a direct impact on safety. Traditional development techniques are not able to increase confidence in immunity from serious flaws, unless substantial effort is spent in testing, leading to a considerable increase in costs and development time. Model Driven Software Engineering methods enable developers to design and implement robotic software by re-using available components whose properties and internal functioning are described by the digital equivalent of a data sheet. Beside components re-use, this sets the stage to derive the properties of the overall system by analyzing the properties of the individual sub-components and it creates the foundations for building tools that enable developers to automatically analyze properties of complex control systems.
We are looking for a talented and enthusiastic postdoctoral researcher who will join our team to study Model Driven Software Engineering methods to develop mobile manipulation capabilities with safety constraints on our humanoid robot R1. The selected candidate will join the interdisciplinary iCub team, and will have the opportunity to work in an exciting and young environment, in close interaction with research engineers, Phd students and post-doctoral researchers.
The successful candidate will be offered a salary commensurate to experience and skills.
