Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) is pleased to announce a new tenure-track opening (open rank).
IIT has state-of-the-art facilities and has rapidly established itself among the top research institutes worldwide. IIT has a strongly international character, with more than 50% of the scientific staff coming from over 60 countries worldwide.
IIT seeks dynamic, highly motivated, independent and innovative researchers to join its community of scientists engaged in cutting-edge research and development. Candidates must be creative thinkers who overcome traditional scientific boundaries, with the overarching goal of melding science and technology to improve human health, welfare and sustainability.
The tenure-track scientists are intellectually and financially independent principal investigators. At IIT they will enjoy world-class start-up and operational funding, as well as internationally competitive salaries and benefits. IIT also strongly encourages and assists its scientists in expanding their research scope by obtaining independent external support from national, European and international funding agencies.
Hiring procedures of IIT are based solely on scientific credentials, and our search committees include external members from foreign institutions to provide diverse and independent perspectives.
IIT is looking for candidates with outstanding track records in Computational Material Sciences with particular focus on the development and application of atomistic modelling techniques to address key questions on the surface chemistry of semiconductor colloidal nanocrystals in relation, but not limited, to the improvement of their opto-electronic properties.
The successful candidate will perform and supervise advanced computations using state-of-the-art HPC facilities at IIT (including hybrid CPU/GPU infrastructures) and at supercomputing centers at national and international level. She/he will be involved in the research activity of the Institute and will perform and develop her/his own independent research line.
The candidate must have a PhD Degree and extensive postdoctoral experience, as well as a groundbreaking record of accomplishments (publications, attracting grants, etc.) in Computational Chemistry/Physics or related fields. Profound expertise in quantum mechanics-based approaches and related methodologies, with application in the area of material science and nanoscience is required. Deep knowledge of Density Functional Theory and related methods is also crucial for covering a wide spectrum of expertise required in computational material sciences.
In particular, IIT seeks world-class established long-standing experience in:
Ideal candidates will have expertise in both materials science research and development of new computational tools to study in an innovative way colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals, and be enthusiastic in engaging in cross-disciplinary research projects as well as collaboration with colleagues at IIT.
The ability to quickly establish and lead an independent, world-class research group is paramount.
A Ph.D. or equivalent graduate degree, as well as relevant postdoctoral experience are required at the time of application.
To apply for the position candidates should register at https://tenure.iit.it and upload their evaluation package (in a single PDF file) containing:
Applicants should also provide names and contact information of three references, familiar with the applicant’s research accomplishments, to prepare letters of recommendation. For junior faculty applicants, references will usually include the applicant’s PhD and postdoctoral advisor(s).
The reference letters must be directly uploaded by their authors on the candidate’s application page and will be made visible to the candidate.
Please note that the system allows candidates to submit complete applications only (i.e.: evaluation package and referees’ contact details). Partially completed applications or registrations will not be considered.
Deadline for submission of applications is 31/12/2020.
Please note that the deadline for submission of reference letters by the referees is 15/01/2021.
Shortlisted candidates will be invited to IIT for an interview.

Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) is a public research institute that adopts the organizational model of a private law foundation. IIT is overseen by Ministero dell'Istruzione, dell'Università e della Ricerca and Ministero dell'Economia e delle Finanze (the Italian Ministries of Education, Economy and Finance). The Institute was set up according to Italian law 326/2003 with the objective of promoting excellence in basic and applied research andfostering Italy’s economic development. Construction of the Laboratories started in 2006 and finished in 2009.
IIT has an overall staff of about 1,440 people. The scientific staff covers about 85% of the total.
