Fondazione Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia – IIT (www.iit.it) is opening a senior post-doctoral position in Materials Science applied to Robotics.
A PhD in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Mechanical engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or similar is required.
Candidates must have outstanding track record in one of the following fields: materials science and engineering, polymer nanocomposites and plastic technologies. Candidates must also demonstrate the ability to work in an interdisciplinary platform.
Experience with electromechanical characterization of soft materials will be a strong asset.
Specifically, the research program aims at the development of a new generation robots based on biodegradable materials to fabricate robot structural parts and elastic energy storage buffers and actuation transmission elements. Tuning of mechanical properties will be explored through variable compositions of polymeric materials and their composites, and modular geometries of such materials achieved through multi-material printing using additive manufacturing. Material compositions and geometries will target to intrinsic embodiment of specific desired stiffness/damping levels ratio as well as their modulation as a function of the component compression with the goal to embed specific dynamic properties and behaviours in the robot bodies.
Candidates must develop innovative assembling solutions and functional plastic components based on biodegradable plastics (either proprietary of IIT or commercial) with custom tailored mechanical and electrical properties.
The research activity will be in collaboration with a team of mechanical designers, robotics experts and materials scientists. The work of the post doc should enable IIT to accomplish and optimize skills in pilot scale plastic processing (e.g. 3D printing, extrusion and injection molding) as well as experience with multifunctional polymer composites fabrication.
