The Advanced Robotics Research Line at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, an English-language research Institute, is seeking a highly motivated, full-time post-doc, who will have a leading research role in Advanced Robotics and Industrial Automation.

The goal of our research is to design, create, develop and manage equipment aimed at optimising autonomous intervention, as far as possible, in the operation of machinery, processes, plants and networks distributing goods or providing services. All these activities require creativeness and experience in solving integration problems deriving from the combination of traditional engineering technologies (mechanics and electrical machinery) with information technologies (automation, electronics, computer science, telecommunications). Increasingly complex automation systems are common in all industrial and tertiary sectors and are used both for making equipment and productive processes automatic and for improving the quality and technological content of products. The presence of different technologies in typical automation engineering products and applications explains the highly interdisciplinary nature of the work programme.
In particular, the activity will focus on the Modelling, Control, Design, Test and Validation for automating the joining of high speed rolls of absorbent paper products using robotics artefacts. In particular, the expected results of this project are focused on design and development of novel systems to pick, manipulate, and place soft thin papers. The modelling and control of multibody systems with variable stiffness (including material science) are requested for this project. Another objective will be also to study the current process used by the companies and to develop novel robotics and autonomous solutions for further applications.
We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a PhD in Robotics, Mechanics, Control, Material Science or other fields related to design and control of robots, and with an excellent track record in the area of robotics.
IIT is an English language institute and international applications are strongly encouraged.
The successful candidates will be offered a contract for 12 months with a highly competitive salary, which will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Expected start date is June 2018 or soon after.
