The Advanced Robotics Research Line at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, an English-language research Institute, is seeking a highly motivated, full-time post-doc, who will have a leading research role in the design and development of Automation Strategies for Industrial Systems.
The selected candidate will join an interdisciplinary team and have the opportunity to pursue research within the Industrial projects proposed by the Fameccanica Company.
Industrial Automation offers challenging career opportunities for engineers in all the fields where automation and control are very important, such as:
The goal of our research is to design, create, develop and manage equipment aimed at optimising autonomous intervention, as far as possible, in the operation of machinery, processes, plants and networks distributing goods or providing services. All these activities require creativeness and experience in solving integration problems deriving from the combination of traditional engineering technologies (mechanics and electrical machinery) with information technologies (automation, electronics, computer science, telecommunications). Increasingly complex automation systems are common in all industrial and tertiary sectors and are used both for making equipment and productive processes automatic and for improving the quality and technological content of products. The presence of different technologies in typical automation engineering products and applications explains the highly interdisciplinary nature of the work programme.
In particular, the activity will focus on the Modelling, Control, Design, Test and Validation for two sub-tasks within the overall Fameccanica project: Fameccanica Robotics Unscrumbling (FRU) and SVOlgitore (SVO). The FRU task will involve the development of a simulator (FRU-1) of the process layout of the company followed by the design and development of the “Fameccanica Robotics Unscramble” (FRU-2) constituted by a modular and reconfigurable robotics gripper able to revolute bottles in the space. SVO-1 will focus on automating the joining of high speed rolls of absorbent paper products. In particular, the expected results of this project are focused on design and development of novel systems to pick, manipulate, and place soft thin papers. SVO-2 will study the current process used by the company and develop novel autonomous solutions. Novel idea will be analysed with an engineering approach and proposed to Company for validation.
We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a PhD in Robotics, Mechanics, Control or other fields related to design and control of robots, and with an excellent track record in the area of robotics.
The research will be focused on the following intermediate results (FRU-1, FRU-2, SVO-1, SVO-2):
