The Electron Microscopy Facility (EMF) of Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) announces an open position for a full time technician.
The EMF provides support with its activities to most of IIT research lines, ranging from the domains of robotics and life science to nanotechnologies and computational science. A wide variety of specimens and tasks is daily presented to the EMF staff, who assists researchers in defining the optimum strategies, provides results to specific scientific questions and training/assistance on the use of specific techniques/instrumentation. The EMF also acts as a general service facility open to external users (academic institutions and companies).
The EMF currently operates state-of-the-art TEMs and SEMs, together with a well-equipped preparation laboratory. The selected candidate will have a key role in the day-to-day running of the EMF and in the maintenance and repair of the instrumentation, with a particular focus on the high-end (S)TEMs (image-Cs-corrected JEOL JEM-2200FS and FEI Tecnai F20), in collaboration with the EMF staff and the instrument suppliers. He/She will take part in the installation of new instrumentation. Moreover, he/she will carry out TEM-based experiments and analyses, mainly in the materials science area, using HRTEM, EDS, EELS and tomography in static as well as dynamic conditions (liquid cell, variable temperature), and organize the results in reports for dissemination. The role will also involve preparation of thin samples for (HR)TEM using conventional techniques.
The ideal candidate will have a M. Sc. in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or related subject and at least three years hands-on experience in the operation, maintenance and repair of TEMs and attachments/accessories. He/She will have a good understanding in the fundamentals of electron microscopy and related techniques applied to the materials science area. Experience in preparation of inorganic samples for TEM will be appreciated. Fluency in English and at good knowledge of Italian will be needed for the role.
Please apply before September 28, 2018.
Expected start date could be November 2018.
IIT was established in 2003 and successfully created a large-scale infrastructure in Genova and a network of 10 state-of-the-art laboratories countrywide with an international staff of about 1100 people from more than 50 countries. IIT's research endeavour focuses on high-tech and innovation, representing the forefront of technology with possible application from medicine to industry, computer science, robotics, life sciences and nano-biotechnologies.
