The Rehab Technologies Research Line, (http://rehab.iit.it/) at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT), Genova, Italy, is seeking to appoint one Postdoc to carry out research on the development of novel wearable and sensing devices for the monitoring of the status of the patient and the implementation of biofeedback.

Rehab Technologies Lab (http://rehab.iit.it/) is an innovation lab jointly created by IIT and INAIL to develop new high tech prosthetic, orthotic and rehabilitation devices of high social impact and market potential. The Lab is primarily focused on disability and rehabilitation, and exploits a co-creation process which involves scientists, patients and therapists in all the phases of the design, realization and testing of devices developed within the lab. 

Lower limb exoskeletal and prosthetic systems typically rely on information coming from the built-in sensors for their feedback control, e.g. IMUs, accelerometers, pressure and position sensors. As the control strategies used in such devices are normally based on state machines, these measurements are employed for the detection of the current state of the system composed of the human and the device assembly. However, it can be argued that this information is limited, especially if we consider the fact that there is no direct measurement of the state of the patient/wearer, e.g. fatigue, position/orientation, general health. To overcome this, we can employ wearable devices based on e.g. EMG, pressure, body dynamics, that can give relevant information on the patient’s state in real time.

Although such devices will bring significant benefits to the information available to the feedback control scheme, the domains of application of these sensorized wearables is not limited to the control of exoskeletons and prostheses. Similar needs are required, for instance, in clinical scenarios where the status of the patient needs to be monitored with sufficient frequency and precision. In such context, clinicians will benefit from this technology as it will return deterministic and objective information on the state of the patient under treatment / hospitalization. This data will be then used for monitoring the status of the patient and to take appropriate decisions on the type of care the patient needs, to personalize the treatment to each single subject.

The aim of this project is to develop novel wearable devices and processing algorithms that can return useful information for either the feedback control or for monitoring the status of the patient in real time. These algorithms will process the data coming from e.g. EMG, pressure, oximeters, etc. to return valuable information on fatigue, position/orientation, health of the patient so that the device or clinician can counteract accordingly. The devices and the estimation/sensor fusion algorithms developed will be tested on elder patients and patients with pathologies such as SCI, stroke, and amputated subjects.

The project will be carried out at the Rehab Technologies Lab of IIT. It will be a technological challenge in which the Rehab Technologies team will share resources, competencies and motivation to achieve excellent results transferable to the medical field. We are looking for a highly motivated, outstanding candidate with the following profile:

      - a solid background in controls/biomedical/electronics engineering, with focus on wearable devices

      - PhD in related field

      - Publication record showing evidence of strong expertise in the field, or relevant industrial experience

      During this period, the postdoctoral researcher will develop the following skills and experience:

      - Autonomously analyze the requirements of complex wearable devices depending on the application

      - Develop sensing hardware

      - Assemble networks of sensors

      - Work in a real-world scenario by operating with both engineers and clinicians

      - Develop a solid background in sensory systems for medical applications
