Fondazione Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia – IIT ( is opening a post-doctoral position in Cell Physiology. The research activities will be performed within the ‘Nanomaterials for Energy and Lifescience’ Research line, and in particular in the ‘Opto-cell’ group, active at the Center for Nano Science and Technology (CNST@PoliMi) in Milan, one of the nodes of the network established by Fondazione Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) in close collaboration with Italian academic institutions.  

Our goal is to develop a radically new technology based on Organic Semiconductors (OS) to trigger optical modulation of living cells activity, and in particular to modulate differentiation, proliferation and function of different cellular models. Main research interests include: characterization of the biophysical processes occurring at the material/cell interface; engineering and development of new biotechnology tools for optical control of cell fate; novel bio-organic interfaces and devices for neuroscience and biomedical applications. 

The selected candidate will conduct innovative research activities in the field of Organic Bioelectronics and will work in a highly multidisciplinary research team, comprising biologists, biotechnologists, material scientists, physicists and engineers. He/she will have access to state-of-the-art facilities for bio-hybrid interfaces development and characterization.

He/she will be responsible for electrophysiology and ion imaging experiments on bio-hybrid interfaces. The position includes day-by-day collaboration with Post Docs and PhDs, supervision of MSc students, preparation of scientific publications and periodic reports and direct involvement in dissemination activities.


  • PhD Degree in Biology, Biotechnology, Physiology, Neuroscience, Biophysics or related fields;
  • Excellent publication track record in the area of Bioengineering and Biotechnology
  • Strong experience and documented lab expertise in:
    • Electrophysiology – Patch clamp technique
    • Ion imaging experiments
    • Primary and secondary cell cultures preparation and management
    • Immunohistochemistry assays
    • Fluorescence confocal imaging
    • Statistical analysis
  • A documented expertise in the nanobiotechnology field and characterization of biomaterials, and/or image processing techniques will be considered a plus.
  • Strong communication and English language skills (written and spoken)
  • Marked aptitude to work in team.
