One postdoctoral position focusing on the investigation and implementation of the mechanisms supporting intuitive mutual understanding between humans and robots during interaction.
Current human-machine co-working is often limited to applications in which machines and humans just work in the same space, without establishing a real cooperation. To achieve human-like collaborative interaction the two partners need to be able to establish mutual understanding, by exchanging both explicit and implicit signals. It is crucial to endow robots with the ability to understand and adapt to the feelings, decisions, goals and needs of the partner. Therefore, the investigation of the human perceptual, motor, and cognitive skills supporting efficient interaction and the implementation of machine learning methods to enable robot action planning and adaptation are the two pillars of the research toward an improved human-robot interaction.
The selected candidate will work on the investigation and implementation of the mechanisms supporting mutual understanding in human-robot interaction, with particular focus on the comprehension of the internal state of the partner and the selection of the appropriate response behavior from the robot.
The successful applicant will join an interdisciplinary team based at Center for Human Technologies (https://www.iit.it/centers/iit-central-research-laboratories/cht), Genoa, Italy, and conduct research within the Cognitive Architecture for Collaborative Technologies (CONTACT) Research Line (Principal Investigator: Alessandra Sciutti). Research will happen in a fully equipped laboratory, supplied with an iCub humanoid robot, motion capture and eye-tracking devices, in a group with a variety of competences ranging from robotics to psychology and bioengineering.

The goal of the research is understanding how humans manage to perform joint actions, establish mutual understanding and achieve efficient cooperation with robots, with implications for the implementation of future collaborative robotics technologies.
