IIT has established a collaboration with the Department of Physics of the Politecnico di Milano and finances 2 scholarships linked to PhD positions available at the PhD Programme in Physics, organized by Politecnico di Milano. Research and training activities are jointly conducted within IIT structures and Politecnico di Milano.

The two positions offered are linked to the following research projects:

  1. Organic Thermoelectrics - Waste heat energy harvesting to power low energy electronics is recognized to be of primary importance for today's society to pursue a sustainable supply of energy by the integration of networks of sensors and actuators into smart grids. Among the variety of sustainable energy conversion technologies, thermoelectric technology is receiving increasing attention. In this framework, organic materials, due to their intrinsic electro-mechanical properties, are studied with the aim to realize flexible, battery competitive and/or complementary, thermoelectric generators.
  2. Printed Electronics - Printed Electronics is an emerging field, aiming at fabricating large-area, flexible and lightweight circuits by means of scalable printing techniques. Applications are broad, from wearable micro- and opto-electronic systems, to Internet of Things, and bio-compatible, and even edible, devices for human body sensing.

In this context, solution-processable polymer semiconductors are one of the most promising options, since they easily lend themselves to printing techniques. A PhD in this area will tackle both the challenges of developing new high performance printed devices, to the deep understanding of the device physics to boost the development of the field.

Recipients of the scholarship will develop the project at the Printed and Molecular Electronics research line, led by its Principal Investigator, Mario Caironi, within the Center for Nano Science and Technology, and at the Department of Physics of the Politecnico di Milano.

The successful candidate will be part of an exciting and international working environment and will work in brand new laboratories equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation.

Excellent communication skills in English, as well as ability to interact effectively with members of the research team, are mandatory.
