2. JANUARY 15, 2015

Call opens with announcement on IIT home page and ads published in Nature Jobs, Science Careers, Cell Careers. The advertising campaign also includes direct emailings to more than 500 scientists worldwide in research areas relevant to the search areas.

3. MARCH 31, 2015

Call closes with a total of 371 applicants, each applicant choosing multiple areas.

Applications are divided into the following areas:

  • Robotics and AI (55 applications)
  • Energy (56 applications)
  • Bioinformatics (49 applications)
  • Computational multi-scale modelling of materials (65 applications)
  • Nanotechnology/materials science (190 applications)
  • Molecular biology (98 applications)

Applications are immediately distributed to Search Committee members for review and initial scoring and rank-ordering.

4. APRIL 2015

Search Committees meet by international videoconference to choose shortlisted candidates, who are invited to IIT for interviews: 6 candidates in Molecular Biology & Bioinformatics, 6 in Nanotechnology and Materials Science (Energy-oriented), 5 in Nanotechnology and Materials Science, 8 in Robotics and AI, and 4 in Computational multi-scale modelling of materials.

5. MAY-JUNE 2015

Shortlisted candidates are interviewed at IIT Genova with international Evaluation Committees. Interviews includes public seminars by each candidate, meetings with IIT scientists, and “chalk talk” with entire Evaluation Committee. Evaluation Committees meet immediately after to make recommendations for winning candidates.

6. MAY-JUNE 2015

Based on recommendations of Evaluation committees, winning candidates are chosen by a representative of IIT external Scientific Technical Committee (STC), in conjunction with IIT Scientific Director. Winning candidates are informed and start-up packages are negotiated. The STC oversees the entire procedure.

7. MAY-JUNE 2015

Seven candidates were successful out of the total shortlisted candidates and four of them accepted IIT’s offer:
