The Center for Nanotechnology Innovation (CNI) is an interdisciplinary R&D center dedicated to the investigation and exploitation of phenomena at the nanoscale. The center is embedded in the NEST laboratories of the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa and is part of the network of the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) whose headquarters are in Genova. CNI research lines span from molecular medicine to new nano-diagnostic, from 2D materials engineering and design to electron crystallography and new advanced microscopy methods.

Within the center which is coordinated by Mauro Gemmi, Camilla Coletti works also as indipendent PI developing the 2D Materials Engineering research line.

Research Lines

The Center hosts two research lines:

The mission of 2D Materials Engineering is to synthesize, investigate, and tailor two-dimensional materials and their heterostructures to pave the way for a new era of transparent and flexible technology. The discovery of graphene has led to a resurgence of interest in other two-dimensional materials, and an ever-growing portfolio of atomic sheets, (such as transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) and layered oxides) is being actively theoretically and experimentally studied.

Electron Crystallography research line develops new transmission electron microscopy techniques for the investigation of inorganic, organic and biological materials. Thanks to the strong interaction of the electrons with matter and the capability to focus electrons in nanometric bright beams, electron diffraction is the only single crystal diffraction technique that can be performed on nanocrystals.
