The Human Capital and Organization Directorate at IIT is committed to supporting all EU and non-EU scientists and students, assisting them in fulfilling legal requirements to live in Italy and the EU, supporting their family members, and promoting interaction and integration into the IIT community.

Moving to a new work environment and nation can be challenging due to bureaucratic procedures. The Directorate offers international staff support in managing necessary bureaucratic procedures for transfer and relocation to Italy, including obtaining entry visas, coordinating appointments with Italian Prefectures and Police Headquarters. Having arrived, foreign researchers will receive our support in obtaining residence permits, health cards, and residence registration. The Directorate also assist in compiling and drafting international family reunification requests and provide support in opening bank accounts, requesting subscriptions for public transport, and finding accommodation.
The Directorate offers all IIT staff a benefit in the form of a private health insurance plan, with the cost fully covered by the Foundation. The insurance is also applicable to family members of staff. Additionally, IIT takes out an insurance policy against occupational accidents for all staff, in addition to the mandatory insurance for accidents at work provided by INAIL.
To help staff complete their annual tax return, the Directorate has an agreement with a tax assistance center, with consultants available both virtually and directly at the IIT center. They also offer support to foreign and repatriated Italian staff in requesting tax breaks related to periods of work abroad and can put staff in contact with a consulting company specializing in tax, social security, and international labor law for complicated situations.
For senior researchers coming from abroad, IIT recognizes the reimbursement of moving costs up to a maximum of Euro 3,500 for relocations within the European geographical area and up to a maximum of Euro 6,000 for relocations from non-European countries to Italy.
The Directorate offers ongoing assistance related to the management of people and the employment relationship through a front desk, a physical and virtual space where staff can chat with specialists in different areas.
There is a range of discounts for outdoor activities, restaurants, museums, theaters, sports centers, language schools, real estate agencies, hotels, and mobility services through agreements with service managers.
Scientific staff at IIT are free to organize their activities autonomously with no time constraints. Access to the laboratories is available 24 hours a day, including weekends, enabling researchers to conveniently manage their own time.
Daily working hours for technical and administrative staff are typically set at 8 hours, with flexible beginning and end times within the limits set by IIT (start: 8-10, end: 17-19). Technical and administrative staff can use the Hour-Bank for all overtime hours worked, enabling them to choose between remuneration or leave time. IIT also promotes the training and health care of its personnel, offering specific permits for educational qualifications and medical examinations. Paid permits are provided for technical and administrative staff who volunteer for scientific experimental activities.
Technical and administrative staff can work from home in order to find a better balance between work and private life. A written agreement with IIT is required through a specific procedure that allows for a maximum of two days of teleworking per week.
IIT adopts a "stop the clock" policy to support scientific staff with their family life and research duties. This policy is in addition to mandatory parental leave for birth, adoption, or custody of children provided for by current legislation. The working relationship and scientific evaluations for career paths are suspended during the period of mandatory/parental leave, allowing staff to interrupt scientific research and resume it once they have returned. This policy promotes gender equality in professional development. For technical and administrative staff, the measures laid down by the legislation in force on the protection of parenthood are in place. IIT also provides specific agreements that guarantee access to discounts for kindergartens and schools for staff families.
The Dual Career Service at IIT aims to facilitate the work placement in Italy of the partners of principal investigators relocating from abroad, to ease the integration of the entire family unit in the country. IIT has entered into an agreement with INTOO, one of the main Italian agencies specialized in recruitment and selection. IIT also helps the partners of Principal Investigators in their job searches.
