Dr Rui Pereira is a Post Doc in the Nanotechnology for Precision Medicine laboratory at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia since July 2015.

He is currently using natural polymers to mimic 3D tumor and somatic tissues ECM microenvironments. He employs cellular 3D hydrogels in combination with microfluidic platforms to create dynamic co-culture systems of brain tumors used to test pharmacological drugs delivery and efficacy. His present research interests focus also on the use of 3D natural scaffolds as applications on cancer, regenerative medicine and nanotechnology for precise medicine.

In 2015, Dr Pereira achieved the European PhD Degree in Tissue Engineering, Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cells. He defended a thesis titled: “Insights into the role of biochemical factors and extracellular matrix environment during chondrocyte culture: relevance on articular cartilage repair strategies” with the co-supervision of Prof. Rui L. Reis, director of 3B´s Research Group –Biomaterials, Biodegradables and Biomimetics, University of Minho, Braga, Portugal and Professor Ranieri Cancedda, Director of Laboratory of Regenerative Medicine, University of Genova, Italy.

During that period, he gained expertise on cellular and molecular methods from stem cells (h amniotic fluid stem cells, h Wharton jelly, h meshenchymal stromal cells); somatic cells (h articular chondrocytes, h synovial fibroblasts, h Osteoblasts, h umbilical endothelial cells) to h T and Dendritic cells. He developed interested in 3D cell culture, in particular in hydrogels used to generate similar ECM to those found in the natural cellular environments. He focuses his attention on the study of cellular responses under physiological and specific inflammatory conditions. His interests relied also on the cross talk between articular chondrocytes and innate/adaptive immunity cells. Working at the interface of biomaterials, cell biology and medicine, he aimed progress in regeneration and repair of musculoskeletal system (cartilage and bone).

He started his education in Applied Biology, then he achieved a MSc in Materials Processing and Characterizations – University of Minho, presenting a study on the degree at 3B’s Research Group (Biomaterials, Biodegradables and Biomimetics) with the supervision of Prof Rui L. Reis and Dr. Helena S. Azevedo  For his thesis titled: “Influence of the incorporation of different proteins into biomimetic calcium-phosphate coatings”, he obtained training in Biomimetic Coatings to induce Osteoconductive and Osteoinductive properties in Biomaterials from natural origin. He developed skills in biomaterials design and characterization, protein coatings and measurement of enzyme activity.
