Mattia Barbieri is a Ph.D. student in Cognitive, Interaction, and Rehabilitation Technologies. The focus of his research is simulating in extended reality (XR)   low-vision diseases in order to develop an immersive wearable system to support low-vision rehabilitation. Perceive and navigating the world as low vision individuals might be useful for ophthalmologists and visual rehabilitators to increase empathy and to discover new compensation techniques; on the other hand, by analyzing ocular movements acquired during experimental sessions with healthy sighted individuals in a condition of simulated low vision, researchers may collect quantitative data to extend the state of the art in understanding the behavioral modifications of low-vision persons.

In 2019 he obtained the Master's Degree program in  Digitial Humanities: Communication and New Media where he had the opportunity to acquire strong knowledge in human-computer interaction, cognitive ergonomics, and interaction in augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR). His thesis concerns the design and development of an application that aims to organize public spaces in AR and VR.

In 2017 he obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Modern Languages, Cultures, and Literature. Humanistic fields were the core and the soul of his instruction. He ended his bachelor's by defending his thesis: "Non-verbal communication in Twin Peaks".
